The Maine State Pomological Society welcomes you to celebrate Maine’s Apple Harvest, statewide, on the 13th Annual Maine Apple Sunday this Sunday, September 13, 2015. Many orchards are offering tasty treats, wagon rides, music, pick-your-own, and more in celebration of Maine Apple Sunday.
Join us here at Pietree Orchard to celebrate Maine's apple harvest and heritage! Pick-your-own apples, wagon rides, lawn games, hay-maze open from 10am-5pm. Enjoy free apple crisp (while it lasts) with our orchardist, Scott Miller, to learn about and taste different varieties of apples grown here at the orchard. We are especially excited to host an Apple Naming Contest from 10am-2pm. All are invited to taste the ME8256 apple and submit a name for a chance to win. Our group of esteemed apple growers will review the entries and pick a winner by late November 2015! This will officially become the name the ME8256 is known and sold as! This is an exciting and rare opportunity for the public! FMI please contact Scott Miller or Alexandra Tomaso at (207) 647-4124.
The ME8256 apple was developed by Russell Bailey at the University of Maine in the 30’s and offered to growers to try in their orchards. R.M Bailey wanted late-ripening apple varieties to supplement the Mac harvest. The ME8256 is a cross of Cortland and Northern Spy- two late season apples. Instead the ME8256 ripened pre-Macintosh season to everyone's surprise and became a great early-season apple. The fruit has an attractive size and appearance with white, crisp, juicy melting flesh and pleasing sub-acid. The ME8256 is a vigorous, productive annual bearer with fruit that clings unusually well for early varieties. It may not have become the late season apple R.M Bailey had hoped for; but it has proven to be a winning early-season apple! We are one of the few orchards in Maine offering this delicious apple to the public.
Maine Apple Sunday is always the second Sunday in September. Please be sure to read the description of each participating orchard to know what times they will be open and the activities they offer: http://www.maineapples.org/directory/index.php/admin
