Meals are not only for refueling our bodies. Meals also nourish our relationships with co-workers, family, and friends. Love is a creative act every day. Mealtimes are some of the times we have a chance to create a more loving and gracious world.
Take the opportunity to stop a few times a day, breathe, and enjoy delicious food and good company. The stress of the day lifts with these important breaks. As we share food together, we find it easier to share what also matters in our lives.
Setting the table with care, a few wildflowers in a jar, lighting a candle or sharing a blessing or a poem makes a simple meal special.
At this season, we especially enjoy fresh tomato slices, torn basil, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, a platter of grilled summer vegetables, a pasta tossed with pesto and dessert of fresh blueberries or sliced peaches.
In today’s economy, with so many households struggling with food insecurity, each meal is an achievement to be treasured. Brown bag lunches can be just as special, particularly when we pack a note or special treat for the ones we love.
As we enjoy the last days of summer, many of us are preparing for a return to school and bag lunches and snacks. Some of the ways we make our lunches and snacks better for the people we love:
- Roll a note of love and encouragement into a napkin
- Draw a placemat and include a crayon for your child's additions
- Plant a broccoli forest or carrot stick fence in a serving of hummus
- Slice a wrap sandwich into spirals
Eat happily. Live happily.
