Most of us eat food that has traveled thousands of miles and around the globe, everything from coffee and tea to fruits and vegetables. Yet here in western Maine and near the Mount Washington Valley, we live in an area that produces some of the most delicious fruits and vegetables in that global system, fruits and vegetables that are consumed within a few hundred miles from where they are grown. That means, among all our anonymous food choices, we have the chance to meet and know the farmers who grow some of our most delicious and succulent vegetables and fruits. This Sunday, July 27th is Open Farm Day in Maine. Take the day to visit a farm and get to know the people who grow your food. Come up to Pietree from 10am-3pm for the opportunity to meet our farmers, learn about farming, and tour the beautiful property. For full event schedule, click here.
Fresh from the field this week we have our first picking from the gorgeous crop of blueberries! We have plenty of kale, lettuce, sweet & juicy sugar snap peas and five varieties of baby zucchini. Our first harvest of leeks and onions came in along with our first harvest of kohlrabi, green cabbage and jalapeño peppers. We continue to have broccoli, cauliflower, chard and snow peas in limited supply.
The blueberry fields will be open for pick-your-own this Saturday and Sunday, July 26th and 27th from 10am-2pm. Please call ahead for field conditions before coming up to make sure the weather is right and we haven't been picked out.
Have you had McCrea's caramels? These caramels are slow-cooked, handcrafted and come in melt-in-your-mouth flavors. The folks at McCrea's use locally sourced cream, milk, and butter with a focus on reusable, recycle, and compostable packaging. The caramels are infused with far off flavors like Madagascan vanilla, ginger root, and black truffles! Come in and try a sample to find your flavor!
Our bread of the week is a Honey Whole Wheat made with local honey and Maine Grains whole wheat flour. This aromatic loaf is impressive in size and perfect for sandwiches, toasted with peanut butter and honey, or paired with Casco Bay's honey butter.
Fresh from the bakery we have blueberry-tarragon poundcake! This luscious cake is flecked with our own fresh tarragon, swirled with our own sweet blueberries, and topped with a lemony tarragon infused syrup! This is the perfect summer cake with it's light texture and summer bounty flavor. Try it topped with fresh blueberries and whipped cream for an extra special treat!
We are changing our Carpe Diem coffee selection weekly so stop by and try a new blend to see if you like it! This week we have the Sunshine Blend available. The ladies at Carpe Diem say this blend is "specifically for a quiet sunrise, one where you ease your way into the day" and we think it pairs wonderfully with our blueberry-tarragon poundcake. Carpe Diem coffee is available by the cup and freshly ground by the pound in the farmstand.
