The nights have cooled and the days are staying brisk! As we turn into the sweet days of autumn, we’re in prime pick-your-own apple season…at least on our conventionally grown side. Due to the late spring frost, our organically grown side has lighter than usual apple set and will be closing to pick-your-own very soon. We still have beautiful and delicious apples in the orchard and at the farmstand! The colder days and nights are needed to help ripen some of our favorites (and yours!): Macoun, Winesap, and Northern Spy.
At the farmstand we begin the steady array of heirloom and other varieties newer to us, varieties that are often extraordinary flavorful! Like pears? Cox’s Orange Pippin and Honeycrisp both have strong pear notes, but are amazing dessert apples. SnowSweet has a note of honey and concentrated apple flavor that reminds one of our tasters of reduced cider. Nod Head is an older variety that is zesty with a crisp snap and almost grapey sweetness. More varieties are being harvested and available in the farmstand.
Why are some of our apples only available in the farmstand? These are usually from our younger trees requiring extra picking care. We don’t want you to miss out on the wonderful apples the juvenile trees are producing, though, so we harvest them and make them available in the farmstand.
We are also pressing fresh, unpasteurized cider regularly, putting our new cider house to work! (And yes, it works really well!) On the weekends at the farmstand we also have mulled cider for sale. Cider donuts are back, too! Pizza and hayrides will be offered on the weekends until October 15.
The cooler nights and days also mean our vegetable garden is coming to the end of its season. Now is the end of the season for cucumbers and tomatoes, and a good time to put kale into the freezer, can beets, and root cellar turnips. We’ll be starting up with vegetables earlier than in previous years in summer 2013, but like our friends the jays and squirrels, we need to put away our stores to keep us through the long winter.
Our bakers keep rolling out amazing breads and sweets! Old-fashioned hermits, pumpkin whoopie pies with cream cheese frosting, apple bread, and bagels have joined the regular rotation. Tuesday is our gluten-free baking day. Check out our selection in our gluten-free fridge and freezer!
