From Alanna, our Farmstand Manager:
Somedays I think about starting my own support group: Cookbooks anonymous. I have a little problem, nothing serious really, except that my brother recently told me he is cutting me off. No more bookshelves! (He builds them for me). It is true, there is not enough time in the day for all of those recipes. But, I just can’t seem to help myself. I love the way all of those colorful bindings look around my kitchen. I love curling up in my rocking chair and leafing through one, reading about the author’s experiences, touching all the pictures, thinking about food and cooking. And I love pulling one down off the shelf, finding exactly what I want (sometimes it takes me a few tries), and laying it out on the countertop, reading over the recipe, and gathering my ingredients- mise en place- pretending for a moment I have something in common with Julia Child.
But, then again, we do have something in common. We cook. We strive to do something better each time, and we want to share it with others. And if it doesn’t work out, there is always someone around to eat the ugly muffins!
It is with great joy that I anticipate our opening weekend, May 23-25, 2014. Yes, I am excited about our coming season, the beauty of the apple blossoms against the ridgelines around us, the smell of the mud and dirt and amazing little seedlings, the green and the red and the purple plants that will ebb in and out of the farmstand, and seeing and talking to all of you. But, right now what I am most excited about is our first cookbook swap. All those books with all their culinary secrets, just waiting to be created and shared and enjoyed. I am beside myself! What better way to start the season than make a commitment to ourselves: I will cook more. I will share more. I will eat more good food. Is there anything better?
