Maine AgraAbility Helps Pietree Orchard

Our Business Monkey in the Orchard

We’re delighted here at Pietree Orchard to work with a terrific program, Maine AgrAbility, a joint effort of University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Goodwill Industries, and AlphaOne . AgrAbility is a national program sponsored by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) to help farmers living with disabilities farm well and longer.

With some changes to the orchard and good equipment (ramps, restrooms, doors, automatic door openers, some road and path grading, planting beds to allow the wheelchair to maneuver), the business manager (a/k/a The Business Monkey) can move around the orchard, checking on crops, visiting with field and farmstand crews, and enjoying the wonderful outdoors. With her personal assistant, the business manager participates in community events and activities, leads educational tours, and is an active part of the local business and farming communities.
