At the Orchard

What's Fresh December 4, 2014

Wow! December is already here, which means this is the last month our farmstand will be open. We will be open daily thru December 24th and will have a great selection of fruit, vegetables, hard-goods, specialty foods, and more available for you daily. Make sure to check us out for your holiday shopping too! Not only do we have a great selection of specialty food but we also have a great selection of quality, one-of-a-kind, locally sourced gifts to suit anyone's taste. Our shelves are loaded with treasures including Advent Calendars, linens, utensils, books, teas, jams, sauces, and more!

Have you had our apple cider? If not, you are missing out! Especially this time of the year- when all the apples in storage are perfectly ripe. We take pride in our cider- pressing only the ripest, tree-picked fruit available, making sure to set cider apples aside all season for pressing. Each batch has it's own unique flavor depending on the apple varieties used and each batch is just as good as the last...sometimes even better! Want to learn a little more about how we make our cider? Check out the Q&A with our orchardist, Scott Miller, in The Art Of Making Cider

Cider is for more than just sipping- it's for cooking too! Apple cider makes an excellent cooking ingredient for desserts, sauces, breads, and more! It is a great way to infuse your favorite dishes with apple flavor! Don't be afraid to get creative in the kitchen with apple cider! Use cider in place of stock next time you are roasting poultry or use cider to braise root vegetables or even in your pancake batter for an extra sweet treat! Our farmstand has a wonderful selection of produce this week! From the greenhouse we have our zesty salad blend,  hearty kale, and crisp radishes. We continue to have several varieties of squash, potatoes, garlic, and onions available. Over a dozen varieties of apples including Macoun, Cortland, Black Oxford, Nod's Head, Stark's Jumbo, and Snowsweet are available in the farmstand! Utility bags of apples are available for $10 per 1/2 bushel- varieties are at orchardist's discretion. We also have animal apples available for $5 per 1/2 bushel. Please call the farmstand for more details at (207)647-9419.

Have you had Thirty Acre Farm's kraut or kimchi? These are lacto-fermented krauts made from Maine-grown vegetables. They are  naturally rich in vitamins and minerals and are alive with effervescence! Each batch is hand-made and hand-packed in jars, with no water or vinegar added. They are great to eat with meat, or on salad, or all by itself!  We have a deep, electric purple Ruby Kraut, regular Kraut with caraway and juniper, and a spicy Kimchi.  For the rest of the season, all Thirty Acre Farm's kimchi and kraut will be 25% off. What a great opportunity to try some out or stock up on something you love!
