Hunger is a reality in our local community. All of us have a part to play in ending hunger. This weekend, October 18th & 19th, we are accepting donations for the the Sweden Food Pantry and donating 5% of our weekend sales to Harvest For Hunger. If you would like to help bring in any non-perishables or cash you would like to donate. The Sweden Food Pantry is open the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month and serves an average of fifty families each week from six towns. Maine Harvest For Hunger is a program designed to encourage businesses, farmers, gardeners and others to donate high quality fruits and vegetables to those in need.
Sunday, October 19th from 12pm-4pm we are hosting a community apple crisp and concert to thank you all for your generous donations and raise awareness of hunger in our local communities. Bring in any food or cash donation and enjoy homemade apple crisp and hot beverages from 12pm-2pm (suggested cash donation $3) under the big tent. Then dance it off with the funky, bluegrass band Tricky Britches from 2pm-4pm! This fun, family friendly event is open to all that donate to the Sweden Food Pantry! What a fun and delicious way to raise awareness and help our local communities!
We just harvested our first crop of Jerusalem artichokes, also known as Sunchokes, which are potato like tubers. Jerusalem artichokes are fantasitc oven roasted- check this simple recipe for inspiration! Our potato harvest is now complete and we will be offering great varieties including Adirondack Blue, Red Gold, Kennebec, French Fingerling, and Dark Red Norland. We have an abundant supply of brightly colored chard, winter squash, onions, and garlic. We have a limited supply of fresh kale, radishes , peppers, and green beans.
From the orchard we have a great selection of mid and late season apples! We still have plenty of the ever popular Macintosh and Cortlands. Other varieties include Cox Orange Pippin, Black Oxford, Freyberg, and Pinova. The Cox Orange Pippin is considered the finest dessert apple with an aromatic, subtle flavor and an excellent crunch!
Our fields are open for pick-your-own apples daily from 10am-4pm. Traditionally we have Macintosh and Cortlands available for PYO. We are excited to announce we will have other varieties available this weekend!
